Description:

I'm so goddamned stupid! Why am I so stupid? Oh, I'll tell you why: I'm an idiot. And why am I an idiot? Because I am a dunce. And why am I a dunce? Because I have absolutely no talent for forming coherent thoughts at all. Ready the firing squad.

i can relate to what your saying here. It is really frustrating to explain these ideas. I remember, at schools philosohy club, trying to explain the whole pointing thing and people just looking at me like "WTF?" I hope you've read saul kripke's amazing book Wittgenstein: On Rules and Private Language.

You know, I keep wanting to buy it, but every time I go to pick it up, there's some other book right next to it that I end up getting.

Going by your videos and the topics you seem interested in, which are the same topics I find fascinating, I really think you should read it. I've been researching Wittgenstein for a long time and these are my top 2 reccomendations to anyone interested in him: 1. Kripke: On Rules, 2. Donald Peterson: Wittgenstein's Early Philosophy. Thats if you want to cut through all the bullshit. Other than that n. garver's essay in the cambridge companion to W. & Monk's Duty of Genius & N. Malcolm's Memoir.

If you would, watch "A Really Fast and More Thorough Tour of My Library, 2 of 2," where I go through my Wittgenstein books, and see if there are any others I don't have that you'd recommend.

I do need to get PMS Hacker's book. I have the others (should never have lent them out, but I'm sure I'll get them back). Ah, but Ayer? Ayer was just off-base.

"you cannot properly use a rule without using a rule on how to use the first," do the rules for rules ever end?

No. But good question, because this is what we were talking about last night -- is logic pre or post language? If pre, then no, it would never end and comprehension would be impossible. The mechanism for learning is much different than that.
