Ron Paul has to be careful. Even though he thinks the monetary system is messed up, he understands that they are still laws and must be enforced.
Its the president's primary job to uphold the constitution and laws passed by congress. He has to show that he would still enforce the law, that would be his job as president.

Ron has already proposed a second dollar which would be backed by precious metals with a fluctuating exchange rate to the fiat dollar.
You could have bank accounts in both dollars, and move between the two much as moving between the two currencies of different countries.
For example, you might want long term savings in the backed dollar while having your mortgage or credit card debt in fiat dollars.

I don't believe Ron Paul is suggesting anyone break the law.
But if someone wants to give something for some service or goods, and the other person is willing to accept it, then a deal should be made in a free society.
In my house alone I have "coins" that work on toll roads here in Houston, some "coins" that work in video games in the city, and even some "coins" from Las Vegas casinos I need to use on my next trip.

I love his answer. As usual, it is spot-on at every point.
Yes, he would love to see competing currencies, but believes it should be done legally.
Yes, he believes in the power and integrity of civil disobedience, but reminds you that just like King, Thoreau, et al., it may well come with the risk of jail time.
He didn't throw anyone under his campaign bus, but at the same time spoke him mind. Perfect answer as usual, if you asked me.

Actually, I believe he proposed simply that gold and silver be (re)declared legal currency, and that sales tax for gold and silver be abolished. This isn't the same as proposing a "second dollar". Rather, banks would be able to issue notes and other financial instruments backed by gold and silver.

I'm a fervent supporter of Ron Paul and I didn't particularly like the answer either. Sounded rather rambling, but he did make a few good points.
